“I’ve spent hours at the beach,
so an ocean view
was a must,” Kate says.

Kate Lynch & David Jollon on July 25, 2014

Once rivals on the basketball court, these two coaches, Kate Lynch and David Jollon, finally waved their white flags over dinner and quickly became each other’s biggest fans. “After my team was knocked out of the district finals, David asked me out for a quick bite to ease the pain,” says Rhode Island native Kate. “We have spent almost every day together since.” David, who hails from New York, shot the winning goal during a trip with Kate’s family to Nantucket when he surprised her with jewelry. “I got butterflies thinking that it was the ring,” remembers Kate. “However, David pulled out a beautiful starfish necklace. Later, he gave me a matching necklace case and inside was my engagement ring.” Champagne all around! Now all the couple had to do was plan a wedding to include two of their favorite things: the ocean and basketball.—TS

Introduction
At the reception, the pair introduced their wedding party as a starting lineup in a basketball game. “They came out to the best sports song of all time—the Chicago Bulls’ ‘Sirius’ by The Alan Parsons Project,” says Kate. The star players had a short one-on-one with the bride stealing the groom’s ball, just like she did his heart.

Style
Taking cues from their engagement, the couple added touches from the island to their navy and white color palette. They used Nantucket Lightship baskets as centerpieces and inspiration for their wedding cake. Crystal starfish adorned the bride’s pearl jewelry and sapphire satin shoes. The groom’s cake was a hit with a custom topper of the couple holding a basketball.

First Dance
“We chose ‘I Don’t Dance’ by Lee Brice for a few reasons,” says Kate. “One, we don’t dance often or well. Two, we love country music. And three, because the lyrics are beautiful and romantic.”

Where Are They Now
After a honeymoon in Nantucket, the couple continues coaching. Kate is head coach of women’s basketball at Southern Connecticut State University in New Haven, and David is assistant women’s basketball coach at Fairfield University.
