“At the very end of the night after we had left the reception… Robby and I took Belichick out for his evening walk. It was so peaceful walking alone around the spot where we were just married with Beli, as a little family,” Emily recalls.

Avid campers Emily McCarthy and Robby Muller spent the summer of 2004 on Lake Coniston in New Hampshire, as staff members for the YMCA Coniston Camp. “We spent the summer getting to know each other over campfires, talent shows, ice cream socials and obstacle courses,” Emily says. As autumn approached, Emily began her freshman year at the University of Rhode Island and Robby returned to Boston College as a junior. The two began a lasting courtship that withstood distance, separate schools and career paths, ultimately reuniting after eight years in New York City. On an unusually warm March day on a walk home from South Street Seaport with their dog Belichick, Robby surprised Emily with a marriage proposal. “Robby reached into [his] backpack, dropped to his knee, and pulled out a ring box.”—DS
Wedding Locale
Emily and Robby decided on Newport, their favorite place, to share with family and friends. “Very few of our guests had been to Newport before and I was anxious for them to love the place as we do,” says Emily. The ceremony and reception was at Hyatt Regency Newport on Goat Island.
First Dance
They took lessons to prepare their first dance. “It set aside an hour every week for the six weeks leading up to the wedding where we could put planning aside and have fun together.”
Flowers
Emily and Robby selected a mixture of low and high bright centerpieces to draw attention to pops of color in the Rose Island Ballroom. Arrangements of beautiful blooms, branches and lanterns set up outside for the ceremony were placed behind the couple’s seats during the reception and added a focal point with extra dimension.
Where Are They Now
Following a honeymoon in Antigua, the newlyweds returned to New York City, where Emily is a technical designer and Robby works as a research analyst.
