Anita Christy & Andrew Spieth
Mt. Hope Farm
July 30, 2011
Published in 2013 Newport Life Magazine

An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but the fruit helped seal the happily ever after of Anita Christy and Andrew Spieth. After years of wondering whether there was more to their friendship, an unforgettable date to an apple orchard quieted all doubts. The inseparable pair became engaged a few months later when Andrew dropped to one knee in that very orchard and set wedding plans in motion. “The theme of apples really inspired us and became the backdrop for the wedding details,” Anita says.

With this decided, Bristol’s rustic Mount Hope Farm fit the bill perfectly for the couple’s 98 guests. “It’s a working farm, once owned by the owners of Narragansett brewery,” the bride shares. “We were completely sold. Seasonal veggies and a cold ’Gansett…what could be better?” Anita chose an Ivy & Aster Anemone gown with ruffled neckline and column skirt for its simple elegance, tying into their “old-world farm theme.”

As the sun rose on their big day, the couple visited the farm’s resident rooster before jogging to the water in preparation for their celebration. Brilliant bouquets and centerpieces of red roses, Gerber daisies, green hydrangeas and Billy ball flowers mirrored the natural summer surroundings. “They absolutely captured the wild farm feeling of the wedding!” exclaims Anita.

The farm-fresh vegetarian menu was equally as colorful, featuring feta and watermelon salad skewers, endive stuffed with beets, gorgonzola and candied walnuts and grilled local vegetable terrine. Satisfying summer fare was followed by mingling and dancing, both indoors and out. The massive barn doorway twinkled with white lights to add to the romance in the air.

After the first dance and cutting of the cake, Pac-Man shaped sugar cookies from Anita’s hometown of Barrington helped to end the evening on a sweet note. Mr. and Mrs. Spieth jetted off to Puerto Rico before making their home in Cambridge. How do you like them apples?–KB

Published in Newport Wedding Magazine 2013

Red Sox Nation spans all over the world; in this case, a bar in New Jersey where two diehard fans met while watching their beloved team play. Brent, who knew Nicole was “the one” early on in their relationship, surprised her with a wedding proposal during one of their typical Wednesday date nights, and the two began planning a celebration that would knock it out of the park.

The baseball fanatics were excited to offer their friends and family the opportunity to take a mini-vacation and discover Newport, a destination they return to every Labor Day weekend. “What could be more Newport then getting married at Trinity Church, the most historic and oldest Episcopal church in Rhode Island,” Nicole says, “or having the reception at Rosecliff, the home of Theresa Fair Oelrichs, silver heiress from Nevada, known for her lavish Newport parties back in the early 1900s.”

Clutching a semi cascading bouquet, similar to the one her mother and grandmother carried down the aisle on their wedding days, the bride was a vision of beauty in her Va Lena Valentina Couture dress.

A 1957 Bentley shuttled the happily married couple from the ceremony to the reception, where personal touches included guests’ old wedding photos framed on the entrance table and crossword place settings that shared fun facts about the couple. Beakers and flasks served as centerpieces, reflecting the groom’s career as a medicinal chemist, and were filled with flowers including calla lilies and hydrangeas in shades of purple and white.

As guests dined on pan seared swordfish and gorgonzola porcini filet mignon, they were treated to the very best in entertainment, including a live rendition of “Sweet Caroline” sung by the bride’s immediate family, and dedicated to the couple’s favorite eighth inning song.

After a weekend of events that culminated with a brunch thrown by the bride’s grandmother, a resident of Newport, the newlyweds honeymooned in Hawaii, beginning their lives as Mr. & Mrs. Whitehead.

Grace Cimo & Ralph McCluskey
Regatta Place
May 12, 2012
Published in 2013 Newport Wedding Magazine

The first time Grace Cimo laid eyes on Ralph McCluskey was to show him rental properties while his own home was being renovated. Or at least that’s what she thought. Ralph allowed his wife-to-be to take him house hunting, and instead of inquiring about move-in dates, asked where the best margaritas in town were. Of course he promptly took her there, and four years later, he proposed on the steps of Eisenhower House. “I always tell my single friends to become a realtor if you want to meet someone,” laughs Grace.

Getting married in the City-by-the-Sea was the obvious choice for the Newport residents, who decided to host their affair at the waterfront Regatta Place. “It was simple and elegant yet filled with fun summer energy with the surrounding boats in the water,” says Grace. “We were married on the dock, which kept it light and fun while offering the best views.” Serving as the best man was the couple’s dog, Guinness, whose bowtie created by the mother of the bride matched the Vineyard Vines Newport ties the groomsmen wore.

In keeping with the Newport vibe, Grace collected rocks from Third Beach and wrote table numbers and guests’ names on each, then set the “place rocks” in a tray of sand from Second Beach. Accenting the venue were floral arrangements in soft pinks and light greens, offering fresh pops of color to the already scenic location.

One of the highlights of the night came when Grace along with her bridesmaids surprised guests with a flash mob of more than 60 people dancing to “I Gotta Feeling” by The Black Eyed Peas. “It was amazing,” says the bride who joined in as they took the stage.–CC

Margaret Ziegler & Andrew Ostrander
Hyatt Regency Newport
June 9, 2012

Published in Newport Wedding Magazine 2013

It didn’t take long for Andrew Ostrander to realize that Margie Ziegler was the apple of his eye. Proposing to his sweetheart while apple picking one fall afternoon, Margie’s tears of joy confirmed to her future husband that she would indeed be his bride. Although according to Andrew, “I didn’t get a solid yes till our wedding day the following June.”

Wanting their nuptials to be outside and near the ocean, the City-by-the-Sea was an obvious choice for their event. “Newport is the absolute most picturesque location for a wedding and even if it’s cloudy, rains or the decorations aren’t exactly what you had planned – all your guests will remember the beauty of Newport,” says Margie.

The color scheme highlighted the beautiful surroundings and views of Narragansett Bay with greens, neutrals and splashes of burnt orange for a pop of color. Bridesmaids wore organic green silk taffeta dresses and carried fragrant bouquets of hydrangea, white lilies and mini roses. A gift from the bride, each wore a sterling silver sea star necklace. Groomsmen donned suits with light green ties and flip flops, the latter a fun nod to their seaside location.

Nautical details were also showcased during the reception with sand dollars on place cards, wreaths of beach heather and shells wrapped around hurricane lantern centerpieces, and homemade chocolate starfish favors. Guests dined on citrus and dill rubbed grilled salmon filet, grilled petite filet of beef and basil roast chicken, and for dessert, were treated to a toasted almond cake with vanilla butter cream frosting.

As the sun set, casting a gorgeous array of colors to the sky, friends and family gathered together one more time to celebrate the newlyweds. “When the last song started, everyone joined us on the dance floor, us in the center, dancing like crazy people,” says Margie, “just so happy to be starting our lives together.”

After the wedding, the couple headed to Hawaii and explored the beauty of paradise before returning to their home in Connecticut.

Top Five: Groom’s Cakes

As the bride, you’ve likely chosen an assortment of feminine colors, flowers and invitations for your wedding day. You’ve finished testing different cake and frosting flavors and picked the perfect romantic cake for your theme. But what about the groom? The groom’s cake is your chance to share a part of your future husband’s personality with your friends and family.

Scrumptions in East Greenwich has an assortment of ideas that are perfect for a groom’s cake. According to Anna Carreiro, executive pastry chef and president of Scrumptions, the top themes for groom’s cakes are “sports, video games, groom’s hobby, groom’ college and groom’s pet.” The intricate detail that goes into each cake can sometimes take Carreiro’s team more time than a wedding cake, but just imagine the smile on his face when he sees their creation and something customized just for him. “A groom’s cake is best served at the rehearsal dinner,” Carreiro recommends, “with a completely different flavor than the wedding cake” so it doesn’t compete.

Check out these cake ideas from Scrumptions that are imaginative, absolutely delicious and bring a little extra humor to the day after months of stressful planning!

Q&A: How to Organize a Guest List

Courtesy of Papers Facebook

He popped the question. Now what? Time to start planning! Judith Carroll of Papers in Newport, RI, explains how to stay organized when getting ready to send out your invitations.

When should I start planning my guest list?
The guest list is the very first thing a couple should plan, Carroll says, so it should be done a year in advance. A head start is crucial because you’ll need a count for your caterer and for your “paper wardrobe,” or all your Save the Dates, invitations and response sets.

My guest list is out of control! How do I start to trim it down?
People who you haven’t seen in a year should not be on the list. If your guest list is still too long after that, Carroll explains a scenario that will make the planning easier: If there are 100 guests, the parents of the bride and groom each invite 25 of their own guests. The couple decides the remaining half of the guests. Depending on who is paying for the wedding, the numbers may need to be tweaked. If only the bride’s family is paying, they may have a few more allowed invitees than the groom’s family. Each couple’s circumstances will be different.

What are some good tools I can use to manage my planning?
The best tool, and one more and more brides are using, Carroll says, is likely already programmed into your computer. Microsoft Excel, or similar spreadsheet-based programs, make tracking information and RSVPs more streamlined. Carroll gives her brides an etiquette sheet with tips and tricks, like how to write names on invitations and what symbols or phrases to avoid.

What information do I need about my invitees?
A correct home address and a phone number are the two most important, Carroll believes. Usually, there are about 10 people who will not respond to invitations. Papers offers a special service that ensures the bride is the star of the show. “We call people who have not responded,” she says, so neither the bride nor the family has to worry.

Courtesy of Papers Facebook

I have my list, but how do I pick my invitations?
Brides go to Papers prepared with their wedding colors and a font style they’ve always loved and pick their invitations from Carroll’s selections—she has hundreds of invitation styles. A traditional bride loves block fonts, Carroll says, but a script looks beautiful on wedding invitations, too.

Once the invitations are sent out, what’s the final step?Make sure your Save the Dates have been ordered nine months in advance of the wedding date and your invitations are ordered six months in advance. Use your Excel spreadsheet to track RSVPs and stay organized.

Happy planning!

Sparks flew when Emily and Wayne were introduced by her parents at Bistro by the Sea, their Matunuck restaurant. So once Wayne, a commercial fisherman, executed a romantic proposal during the family vacation in Maine, there was no question where the Exeter couple would wed. “We picked this location because my parents, Duane and Karleen, have run Bistro by the Sea for 25 years,” Emily said. “I basically grew up there, and it’s where we met, so there was no better place.”

The bride is a chef at the restaurant, so having planned weddings there before, she knew just where to begin when coordinating her own big day. When she walked down Theatre By The Sea’s garden aisle in her Monique Lhuillier lace gown, all the romantic details were in place. A natural color palette of greens, browns and white gave the space an almost antique feeling, while flowers from her mother’s garden, including roses and dahlias, made each table at the reception stand out. “We wanted a special place where guests could mingle, so we rented two extra tents,” Emily explained. “One was strictly for dining and the dance floor, while the other contained sofas and couches with cocktail tables and the bar where everyone could visit with each other and relax.”

Personalized Jones Soda bottles, with photos of the happy couple, were fun guest gifts, while a surprise visit from Emily’s grandmother was a gift for the newlyweds that they won’t soon forget. “She had told everyone that she had to stay at her home in Florida,” Emily said. “We are extremely close and (her visit) really stuck with me as the moment it all became real.”

The new Mr. and Mrs. Marote honeymooned on a road trip to Walt Disney World, where they had some good old-fashioned fun, and now live in Exeter.

“…catching her eye for the first time that day, seeing her more beautiful than she had ever been!”

Cara Gontarz & Jordan Hume
October 6, 2012
Atlantic Beach Club
Published in Newport Life Magazine August 2013

Amidst the famed August sunrise at Sachuest Point, in Middletown, Jordan Hume couldn’t keep his eyes off his dream girl, Cara Gontarz. Savoring every minute of that early morning walk, Jordan uttered those iconic four words with the promise of forever.
St. Barnabas Church, in Portsmouth, set the scene for the couple’s ideal October wedding ceremony, a place where Cara, a Portsmouth native, had spent many of her early years singing in the children’s choir. Wanting to celebrate their mutual love for the ocean in their reception venue, Cara and Jordan fell head over heels for the Atlantic Beach Club and its unparalleled ocean view the minute they opened their doors. “We loved the beautiful reception room, the giant dance floor, the cocktails on the deck, easy access to the sandy beach, the food and the wedding coordinator,” says Jordan.

Striking shades of blue transcended their color scheme, a simple reminder of the couple’s shared love affair with the beach. Bridesmaids dazzled in various designs of blue knee length taffeta dresses that complemented their flower arrangements. To keep family involved in the festivities, Jordan’s sisters stood by his side at the altar as groomswomen.

Still, it was the bride that elicited tears from the crowd of 180 guests, as she made her way down the aisle arm in arm with both of her parents, Christopher and Carol. Describing this as his most cherished memory, Jordan recounts locking eyes with his soon to be bride. “The moment right before meeting her eye when the entire church went silent, the doors shut, and then the dramatic entrance … catching her eye for the first time that day, seeing her more beautiful than she had ever been!”

Continuing with the celebration, family and friends mingled over an ocean inspired cake, topped with seashells and starfish, made by one of Cara’s oldest friends. Eager to get their feet in the sand, the newly announced Mr. & Mrs. Hume retreated to the club’s beach, where they stole a few kisses and adoring looks before heading back to a night of uninhibited dancing.

Denim and Tulle

$

Traditionally, many of us visualize our weddings with formal fabrics such as taffeta, silks and lace. However today’s brides and grooms often want their wedding to reflect their personalities and lifestyles. Denim provides a familiar comfort we get from our favorite casual wear that creates a natural, relaxing occasion to share with our most intimate guests.

Denim is a nice compromise for the bride who wants to keep some of the glamor she’s always fantasized about as a child, while reflecting the lifestyle of the woman she’s become. If she pairs a soft chambray blouse with an extravagant tulle skirt, she can opt to kick off her heels and walk toward her future husband barefoot. She immediately sets an easygoing tone that spills over to the rest of the day.

“I said, ‘Yes!’ and immediately followed with ‘You know we have to get married in Newport, right?’” says Julianna.

Julianna MacFarland & Tyler Oates on May 23, 2015
Published in Newport Wedding Magazine 2016

Little did Georgia native Julianna MacFarland know that she would meet the man of her dreams when she served coffee to students at Eastern Nazarene College. “It was love at first sight,” says the bride of Tyler Oates from Philadelphia. Several months later, while admiring a koi pond Tyler had built in his parents’ picturesque backyard, Julianna’s dreams were realized when her groom-to-be dropped to his knee while offering her a token of his eternal love. Preparations began soon after for their wedding in the City by the Sea, where Julianna’s ancestors were among the founders. The couple secured The Hotel Viking for their reception. The bride says, “It has always been a favorite of mine for its history and [more importantly] their seafood chowder!”—TS

Bridal Ensemble
To complement her dupioni silk fit-and-flair gown, Julianna enlisted Andria Bird Bride to design a custom crystal necklace, belt and veil in addition to having her fashion a headpiece from her great-grandmother’s jewelry.

The Ceremony
For Julianna, the First Presbyterian Church in Newport that her great-great-great-grandfather helped build was the obvious choice. “As a flower girl in my aunt’s Newport wedding 20 years ago, I decided that I would get married in the same city my family had lived in for centuries and in the same church as the previous five generations of women in my family.”

Furry Friend
Julianna has a husky named Nekoda that she wanted to include in the celebration, but couldn’t figure out a practical solution. Her mother surprised her by having someone bring him to the church after the ceremony. “There was a lot of flying fur and happy tears,” Julianna says.

Where Are They Now
After a sunny honeymoon in Florida, the happy couple returned to their home in Quincy, MA where Julianna is a digital media producer and Tyler is a social worker.

“I’ve spent hours at the beach,
so an ocean view
was a must,” Kate says.

Kate Lynch & David Jollon on July 25, 2014
Published in Newport Wedding Magazine 2016

Once rivals on the basketball court, these two coaches, Kate Lynch and David Jollon, finally waved their white flags over dinner and quickly became each other’s biggest fans. “After my team was knocked out of the district finals, David asked me out for a quick bite to ease the pain,” says Rhode Island native Kate. “We have spent almost every day together since.” David, who hails from New York, shot the winning goal during a trip with Kate’s family to Nantucket when he surprised her with jewelry. “I got butterflies thinking that it was the ring,” remembers Kate. “However, David pulled out a beautiful starfish necklace. Later, he gave me a matching necklace case and inside was my engagement ring.” Champagne all around! Now all the couple had to do was plan a wedding to include two of their favorite things: the ocean and basketball.—TS

Introduction
At the reception, the pair introduced their wedding party as a starting lineup in a basketball game. “They came out to the best sports song of all time—the Chicago Bulls’ ‘Sirius’ by The Alan Parsons Project,” says Kate. The star players had a short one-on-one with the bride stealing the groom’s ball, just like she did his heart.

Style
Taking cues from their engagement, the couple added touches from the island to their navy and white color palette. They used Nantucket Lightship baskets as centerpieces and inspiration for their wedding cake. Crystal starfish adorned the bride’s pearl jewelry and sapphire satin shoes. The groom’s cake was a hit with a custom topper of the couple holding a basketball.

First Dance
“We chose ‘I Don’t Dance’ by Lee Brice for a few reasons,” says Kate. “One, we don’t dance often or well. Two, we love country music. And three, because the lyrics are beautiful and romantic.”

Where Are They Now
After a honeymoon in Nantucket, the couple continues coaching. Kate is head coach of women’s basketball at Southern Connecticut State University in New Haven, and David is assistant women’s basketball coach at Fairfield University.

Laurie & Michael

“Our two distinctly different worlds collided in the small town of Newport, RI in 2012.”

Laurie Schrall & Michael Laporte on October 18, 2014
Published in Newport Wedding Magazine 2016

Little did Laurie Schrall and Michael Laporte know their paths were destined to cross while pursuing graduate degrees in Newport at the U.S. Naval War College. Laurie had been living in Washington D.C. for more than a decade and came here to earn her master’s, while Michael had just returned to the U.S. after completing two tours in Afghanistan as a Major in the U.S. Army. The couple’s meet-cute would be on a late summer night in downtown Newport as members in a running club. After a year in Newport falling in love, Laurie had to return to D.C., so they only saw each other intermittently. One weekend after she traveled through a treacherous snowstorm to Newport for Valentine’s Day, Michael proposed near the anchor on Bowen’s Wharf where they met on their first date. They decided to marry in Newport. “This is where we met, share mutual friends, the place we were engaged, and the one place that makes us both happy.”—DS

Special Favor
Michael and Laurie chose military challenge coins bearing an emblem that symbolized their wedding theme and unique backgrounds. They were presented to guests in small cloth bags with a graphic of a pineapple and the date of the wedding. Small gold cards were placed in each bag with an explanation of the coin tradition and the symbolism of the Newport pineapple.

Venue
The Newport Yachting Center’s Sunset Terrace offered unparalleled views of the harbor and Pell Bridge. Because it is located near Kay Chapel, where Laurie and Michael exchanged vows, their guests were able to walk to the reception, while enjoying the sights of downtown Newport.

Wedding Attire
Laurie arrived in a Maggie Sottero, lace fitted slim A-line gown adorned with crystal embellishments on the front of one side. Her bridesmaids wore navy blue lace dresses accented with silky sunny yellow pashminas. The groom and groomsmen wore U.S Army uniforms, and tuxedos.

Centerpieces
Pineapples painted in 24 karat gold placed on gold chargers accented with tea lights, which reflected in the gold pieces were crafted to celebrate Newport.

Where Are They Now
The newlyweds now live in Hawaii, where Michael was promoted to Lt. Colonel and Laurie works for the U.S. Department of Defense.

“At the very end of the night after we had left the reception… Robby and I took Belichick out for his evening walk. It was so peaceful walking alone around the spot where we were just married with Beli, as a little family,” Emily recalls.

Emily McCarthy & Robert Muller on April 18, 2015
Published in Newport Wedding Magazine 2016

Avid campers Emily McCarthy and Robby Muller spent the summer of 2004 on Lake Coniston in New Hampshire, as staff members for the YMCA Coniston Camp. “We spent the summer getting to know each other over campfires, talent shows, ice cream socials and obstacle courses,” Emily says. As autumn approached, Emily began her freshman year at the University of Rhode Island and Robby returned to Boston College as a junior. The two began a lasting courtship that withstood distance, separate schools and career paths, ultimately reuniting after eight years in New York City. On an unusually warm March day on a walk home from South Street Seaport with their dog Belichick, Robby surprised Emily with a marriage proposal. “Robby reached into [his] backpack, dropped to his knee, and pulled out a ring box.”—DS

Wedding Locale
Emily and Robby decided on Newport, their favorite place, to share with family and friends. “Very few of our guests had been to Newport before and I was anxious for them to love the place as we do,” says Emily. The ceremony and reception was at Hyatt Regency Newport on Goat Island.

First Dance
They took lessons to prepare their first dance. “It set aside an hour every week for the six weeks leading up to the wedding where we could put planning aside and have fun together.”

Flowers
Emily and Robby selected a mixture of low and high bright centerpieces to draw attention to pops of color in the Rose Island Ballroom. Arrangements of beautiful blooms, branches and lanterns set up outside for the ceremony were placed behind the couple’s seats during the reception and added a focal point with extra dimension.

Where Are They Now
Following a honeymoon in Antigua, the newlyweds returned to New York City, where Emily is a technical designer and Robby works as a research analyst.

“We used to do family cruises,” says Kirsten. “Castle Hill Lighthouse was always the first thing we saw as we left and as we returned. It is a beacon of home and family.”

Kirsten Ferguson & Christopher Lingerfelt on August 29, 2014
Published in Newport Wedding Magazine 2016

Meeting through friends at a college football game in Alabama, Kirsten Ferguson, a Jamestown native, and Chris Lingerfelt, a student at Auburn University, hit it off and continued their relationship long distance until the miles could no longer keep them apart. One night, Kirsten’s dog, Olive, said goodnight with a special sparkly surprise tied to her collar and Chris was close behind with a life changing question. The couple soon began to plan their Newport nuptials at Castle Hill with a nod to the bride’s nautical past.—TS

Flowers
The bride’s flower choices carried the couple’s natural coastal vibe throughout the occasion with a mix of local flowers, including blue and white hydrangeas, mini green hydrangeas, fresh lavender, cream roses, white orchids, white ranunculus, freesia, local dahlias, green hypericum berries and succulents.

Decorations
“Instead of table numbers, we named each table after one of our favorite places in Jamestown and on Aquidneck Island, for example Beavertail, Clingstone and 40 Steps,” says Kirsten. “When guests arrived at their table, there was a photo of the place and a write-up on its history.” The nautical theme was also present in décor accents including rope, driftwood and beach rocks.

Special Touch
Instead of a guest book, the couple had a bowl of blank wooden puzzle pieces. Each guest was asked to sign a piece. Later, Kirsten and Chris put it together and had it framed.

Where Are They Now
After soaking in the tropical rays in St. Barths, the couple settled in Charlotte, NC where the bride works as a public relations and digital media specialist and the groom as a financial analyst.

Andrea & Arthur

“Since I made so many things, all the little details of the wedding were ‘me.’ I don’t know if we could’ve gotten the same feeling if I hadn’t made so much,” says the DIY bride.

Andrea Hubbard & Arthur Klock on September 21, 2014
Published in Newport Wedding Magazine 2016

Who would’ve thought that a game of flag football would lead to a lifetime of love? Andrea Hubbard, from Massachusetts, and native New Yorker Arthur Klock were quite unaware when they met at one while in veterinary school. Their feelings for each other ignited, and a few years later, they went out to dinner to celebrate her passing the veterinary board exam. “I had an idea a proposal was coming [because] he had left ring pricing pamphlets in the apartment but I bought the idea that this was a celebration,” she says. The bride-to-be was caught by surprise when dessert arrived, complete with a sparkly side-dish accompanied by a very important question inscribed in chocolate on her plate.—TS

Venue
A destination wedding was in order for the couple who wanted a central location to both families in New York and Massachusetts. Andrea says, “I wanted a mansion wedding. Glen Manor is so beautiful and I loved how you could really use so much of the space.”

DIY
The crafty bride made the majority of the decorations for her big day. The creative list included everything from the invitations and flower arrangements to clutches and accessories for her bridesmaids. Arthur contributed with a handmade lobster trap card box and cornhole game.

Sweets
The couple opted for a cupcake tower topped with a small wedding cake for the traditional slice. They also offered a make-your-own cannoli bar with toppings including chocolate chips, nuts and dried fruit.

Where Are They Now
After an exotic honeymoon in New Zealand and Fiji, the couple returned to New York where they both are veterinarians.

“When I was a little girl, I attended my aunt’s wedding reception at Rosecliff,” Andrea says. “From that day forward, I dreamt of being married there.”

Andrea Mauro & Evan Gotlob on August 23, 2014
Published in Newport Wedding Magazine 2016

It all began with a handshake and a smile when Rhode Island native Andrea Mauro met Evan Gotlob on her first day of work in a New York City prosecutor’s office. Their relationship was purely professional; however, says Andrea, “Between shared weekend arraignments shifts, office softball games and coffee breaks, something shifted.” During the couple’s first date, they spent hours walking lower Manhattan while eating red velvet cupcakes and sharing stories. Love quickly followed. Not wanting to fuel any office gossip, the couple kept their courtship quiet until Andrea answered a resounding “Yes” to Evan’s proposal while they stood at the highest point on the Brooklyn Bridge.—TS

Tradition
Each wedding guest received a small box containing five Jordan almonds with the following inscription in honor of the bride’s Italian heritage: “The five almonds in this box represent five wishes for the bride and groom. These wishes are for health, wealth, happiness, fertility and longevity.”

Little Things
Little details carried throughout the day. As the ring bearer, Evan’s two-year-old nephew Noah carefully carried the rings on a little pillow made out of material from Andrea’s late grandmother’s favorite pink cashmere sweater. The groomsmen received personalized bobble-heads that were each made to look like the recipient (see p. 18). And the couple hired an expert to roll cigars with custom labels for party-goers.

Love
The couple shares a great affinity for tennis, so they included the International Tennis Hall of Fame as the site for their welcome cocktail reception and rehearsal dinner. “On the morning of our wedding, while I was busy fretting over hair and makeup,” says the bride, “Evan was busy playing tennis with his college coach and former teammates. It was his first time on grass courts.”

Where Are They Now
After saying “Aloha” to their Hawaiian honeymoon, the couple continues to work as attorneys in New York and still eat a cupcake or two on occasion.

Lauren says, “We wanted a place that was romantic and simple, but would still be special and fancy enough for a wedding. Newport Vineyards really is the best of both worlds.”

Lauren Schmalzbach & Luke Logan on July 18, 2015
Published in Newport Wedding Magazine 2016

After several spirited semesters together at the University of Miami, Luke Logan asked Lauren Schmalzbach on their first date in the fall of 2007. These two Hurricane fans continued their exuberant journey in Miami after graduation until Luke returned to graduate school to study oceanography at the University of Rhode Island, and Lauren transferred to Boston. The two finally settled in Newport when Luke accepted a position at Lockheed Martin in the spring of 2013. During a reunion back to UMIAMI, Luke finally popped the question where it all began. Lauren says, “Surrounded by the same friends, Luke officially asked me to be his best friend forever.” Lauren’s response, “It’s a about damn time!” The two wanted to share their home in Newport with their guests and decided for a romantic, understated wedding at the nearby Newport Vineyards in Middletown.—DS

Special Gifts
Along with monogrammed seersucker shorts and white shirts, Lauren gave her UMIAMI alumnae bridesmaids gold bracelets engraved with the University’s coordinates, 25.7216° N, 80.2793°W.

DIY
The couple found three antique dresser drawers and asked guests to leave notes for their first 1st, 10th, and 25th anniversaries. After the wedding, they enclosed the drawers with the notes and a bottle of wine to open on each anniversary.

First Dance
Lauren and Luke have traveled across the country to see their favorite indie-country acoustic artist, Corey Smith. They danced to Smith’s first traditional love song, “Love Says it All.”

Where Are They Now
After a honeymoon in Antigua, Lauren works as an accounting supervisor at CBIZ Tofias and Luke is a systems engineer at Lockheed Martin.

“Watching him so nervous, trying to find the right words…I had no other answer but to [say] ‘yes’ over and over.”

Sarah Grinnell & Jeremiah O’Connor on November 9, 2014

Published in Newport Life Magazine November/December 2015

Newport is where it all began for Jeremiah O’Connor and Sarah Grinnell. A mutual friend’s hunch about the two proved to be true when Jeremiah came back home from New York and met Sarah for the first time. After a night out in Jamestown, the two knew they had something special. Sarah recalls, “Jerry and I immediately hit it off with our mutual love for local sports.” Jerry moved back to the Ocean State permanently after a six month long-distance courtship to be with Sarah full time. Though they discussed marriage, Jerry recalls having “butterflies in his stomach” when he proposed privately on a romantic winter evening over champagne and chocolate-covered strawberries. As natives of Portsmouth and North Kingstown with a deep affection for the area, the Glen Manor House was a natural choice for a sumptuous autumnal ceremony surrounded by their closest friends and family.—DS

Al Fresco Autumn Ceremony
Though Jerry and Sarah decided on a late fall wedding, the weather was generously warm. Jerry recalls, “We were able to get the full experience of the breathtaking foliage and ocean view.”
Sweets
A scrumptious vanilla buttercream frosted almond cake filled with raspberry preserve and chocolate ganache filling was served along with a yummy assortment of chocolate-covered strawberries, mini cheesecakes, fresh fruit tartlets, mini crème brulees and cream puffs.
Most Cherished Memory
Reciting their vows was the couple’s most cherished memory. The two recall, “We spent many days contemplating our relationship goals and priorities, building them into a personal profession of love.”
Special Gifts
In lieu of favors, the couple made a donation to the American Cancer Society in honor
of family members who have struggled with the disease.
Where Are They Now?
After a fiesta filled honeymoon in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico, Mr. and Mrs. O’Connor returned to their home in Newport where Sarah is a dietician and Jerry is an Account Manager at CVS Health.

Patricia & Leo

“We considered it an honor to be married in a mansion that has such beauty and amazing historical significance. And to treat our families and guests to the same—it was simply a no-brainer.”

Patricia Mascali & Leo Orsi on June 12, 2015
Published in Newport Life Magazine January/February 2016 issue

Little did Patricia Mascali of Jamestown know that her position as a realtor would open the door to the love of her life. Selling New Jersey native and Princeton alumnus Leo Orsi his coastal home led to a celebratory dinner at Castle Hill Inn and three years later, a proposal on Valentine’s Day. For most of their lives, the two have enjoyed the social life and nightlife of the City by the Sea, and with shared support for the Preservation Society of Newport County, the couple agrees that they, “couldn’t think of a more majestic, elegant, beautiful and historical venue than the Tea House and the Marble House Mansion,” Patricia says.—EK

Cake:
As the two are members of the Princeton Fishing Team and Leo the author of the best-selling book Striper Chronicles, their cake topper featured a custom porcelain figurine of a bride reeling in her groom with a fishing rod.
Cherished Memory:
The ceremony along with the “elegance and grandeur” of the Gold Ballroom were the couple’s favorite aspects of their celebration, in addition to entertainment provided by a live nine-piece band.
Advice:
“If at all possible, start planning a year in advance,” suggests the bride. “Venues, caterers, florists, and entertainers book way in advance. If you start early you have a better chance of getting exactly what you want when you want it.”
Honeymoon:
Prior to the wedding, the couple enjoyed a 14-day Caribbean Holiday cruise. After their wedding day, they rented a waterfront home on Block Island with their wedding party and went striped bass fishing.
Where Are They Now?
Mr. and Mrs. Orsi reside in Jamestown where Patricia remains a realtor at Mansions & Manors and Leo is a commercial real estate consultant.
