Denim and Tulle

$

0

Traditionally, many of us visualize our weddings with formal fabrics such as taffeta, silks and lace. However today’s brides and grooms often want their wedding to reflect their personalities and lifestyles. Denim provides a familiar comfort we get from our favorite casual wear that creates a natural, relaxing occasion to share with our most intimate guests.

Denim is a nice compromise for the bride who wants to keep some of the glamor she’s always fantasized about as a child, while reflecting the lifestyle of the woman she’s become. If she pairs a soft chambray blouse with an extravagant tulle skirt, she can opt to kick off her heels and walk toward her future husband barefoot. She immediately sets an easygoing tone that spills over to the rest of the day.

Integrating classic shades of indigo into accessories helps to extend a warm invitation to your guests to relax and enjoy. Pure baby’s breath bouquets and centerpieces wrapped in brushed blue ribbons saves time and money, without compromising elegance. Cotton twill linens that dress down bone white china on elongated farm tables welcome etiquette-shy families with children.

Jeans have always been the most versatile pieces in our closets as they can be dressed up and down for many occasions. That same versatility applies to your wedding as well. Denim offers endless combinations of colors, fabrics, and fixtures for your wedding with a familiarity we all love.

“With all the memories of us dating and getting engaged, there was no other option but beautiful Newport.”

Corrissa Norton & Jonathan Doda on November 21, 2015

Published in Newport Life Magazine July 2016 issue

Jonathan Doda set a persistent course to win Corrissa Norton’s heart. The Newport-based couple met after a mutual friend invited Corrissa to Jon’s apartment for “Taco Thursday.” When Corrissa had to leave early, Jon asked for her number and the fairytale began. Within weeks, Corrissa introduced Jon to her young daughter, Reese, and was blown away by his kindness. Ten months into their romance, as the couple played with Reese, Jon proposed and slipped the ring on his new fiancee’s hand. He continued spreading the love when he turned to Reese with a pair of diamond earrings and asked, “Will you be my daughter?” –PL

Wedding Theme

The couple chose colors that were timeless and classic with a dose of romance: black and white with champagne pink for a pop of color. The floral designs followed suit with bouquets of baby’s breath crowned with white and champagne pink Tibet roses. The wedding cake, a lemony whipped cream topped tower, was even petal-adorned.

Bridal Gown

Corrissa redesigned her godmother’s wedding dress, a classic Lazaro gown, into a fashionable modern A-line strapless beauty in candlelight white silk with an antique beaded bodice.

Special Touches

The couple’s strong commitment to family was the highlight of the day. In addition to adorning the fireplace mantle with wedding photos of their grandparents and parents, the couple requested that in lieu of gifts, donations be made in honor of Corrissa’s cousin who has brain cancer.

Where They Are Now

Post honeymoon in Kauai, Hawaii, the couple returned to where their story began; Corrissa is Sales Manager at The Hyatt Regency Newport Hotel & Spa, and Jon presides as the Contract Manager of Biomedical Services for Claflin Medical Equipment.

“The best part of our wedding was having everyone that’s important to us all together in our favorite place, Newport!”

Sarah Riczko & Earl Evans on July 25, 2015

Published in Newport Life Magazine July 2016 issue

Earl Evans had his eye on Sarah Riczko since their time at Salve Regina University. Earl explains that he was known for hosting house parties and had seen Sarah several times at the fetes. “I remember her. She remembers my house,” jokes the groom. “But she doesn’t remember me.” Although they casually crossed paths several times during matriculation, it wasn’t until they both graduated that they became a couple. Seven years into their relationship, the couple awoke one Saturday morning in November 2014 to “take a nice drive and go fishing.” After stopping at Lloyd’s Beach in Little Compton, perfectly planned during low tide, they walked out to the tip, where Earl dropped to one knee and pulled a ring out of his fishing bag. The new bride-to-be had always dreamed of having a reception at Ochre Court after an intimate ceremony at Our Lady of Mercy Chapel, officiated by her childhood priest, Father Dan Murphy. And she got just that! –PL

Wedding Theme

“Simple yet elegant” set the tone for a stately mid-summer wedding, following a traditional color scheme of blue, black and white. The bridesmaids wore knee-length, midnight blue, halter-top cocktail dresses and held bouquets of white hydrangeas tied with matching blue satin ribbon. The groomsmen donned black peak-lapel tuxedos topped with smart black bow ties and white calla lily boutonnières.

Bridal Gown

Sarah walked the isle holding a bridal bouquet of mixed all-white roses and hydrangeas, hand-tied with ivory ribbon from her dress, a refreshingly graceful Lian Carlo form fitting, open back, ivory lace gown with capped sleeves and mermaid train.

Gifts

The groom presented his wedding party with personalized needlepoint flasks by Smathers and Branson, while the bride adorned her maids with monogrammed linen shirts with accompanying beach-themed clutches.

Where They Are Now

After a Caribbean honeymoon in Antigua, the new Mr. and Mrs. Evans returned to Newport, where Sarah is a Teacher at Shining Star Preschool in Middletown and Earl is the proprietor of Paramount Auto Group.

“Newport is special to both of us for so many reasons…Although I have only lived in Newport for eight years, from the moment I first stepped onto this island, I knew it was special and that this would be my home.”

Erica Kana & Kenneth Grauer on October 3, 2015

Published in Newport Life Magazine July 2016 issue

Erica Kana and Kenny Grauer both knew they could not let their relation-ship sail away. Kenny, a native of Newport, met Erica while he was a student at the International Yacht Restoration School where she worked as an events assistant. After Kenny’s graduation, the two would see each other occasionally until Erica finally reached out. One year and nine months after their first official date at Perro Salada in Newport, Kenny asked Erica to marry him while at her beloved Mull Creek Park in her home state of Ohio. Erica explains, “Because I only see my family a few times a year, it was so special for me to be able to see them in person and share our first toast of champagne with them as an engaged couple.” –SK

Tradition

The couple chose Gooseberry Beach for their wedding, where Kenny’s grandparents were two of the original founders. Kenny spent his entire childhood on its shoreline and plans to continue making memories there with his new bride as the couple inherited a share of the beach from his grandmother.

The Detail is in the Dessert

Erica was especially excited to put her wedding planning expertise to use on the dessert display. She wanted it to be a memorable personal touch so she incorporated the northern-Ohio tradition of a cookie table. The dessert table included 15 different types of cookies and eight round cakes in flavors such as salted caramel, Oreo, and coconut with pineapple.

Coincidence or Fate?

Erica’s grandfather’s homemade wine was “a must” at the wedding. His most historied wine just happens to be Gooseberry, which he makes from berries he grows himself.

Where are They Now?

After roaming through unspoiled beauty on St. John of the Virgin Islands, they began their new life together in Newport, where Erica is the sales manager at Castle Hill Inn and James is the generator technician at CAT Entertainment Services.

We chose Bristol because we wanted to get married on the water and show our guests how special our hometown is. As soon as we walked into the Hall of Boats, we fell in love with the space.

Kristina Galley and Everett P. Correia III September 17, 2016

Published in the January/February issue of Newport Life Magazine

A summer’s day on the water and night on the town in Newport with friends was all it took to ignite a spark between Rockville, CT native Kristina Galley, who was then living in Boston, and Everett Correia from Portsmouth. “We joked, danced and made fun of each other all day. Our sarcastic sense of humor is what drew us together,” explains the bride. “After about a month, we finally had our first date in Boston.” Fast forward innumerable trips back-and-forth between towns, four years of love and sarcasm and a joint move to Bristol, the couple found themselves at Sachuest Point in Middletown on November 1, 2015 faced with a very important decision. While walking a path that overlooked Second Beach, Everett knelt and asked Kristina to marry him and the couple quickly began making plans for their hometown nuptials. –TS

Dress to Express

To give her bridesmaids a bit of wiggle-room in their fashion statement, they each chose their own style while Kristina designated a general color scheme of soft grays, pale pinks and champagne. The flowers complemented the dresses with a palette of light pinks, creams and white with a touch of purple and green accents with eucalyptus and succulents.

Meaningful Metallic

To reflect the rose gold color of the wedding bands, the couple wove the metallic hue throughout the decor and bridal party accessories, including rose gold embossed invitations, the men’s tie clips, the bride’s headpiece and jewelry.

Fun and Frivolity

For her grand entrance, the bride and her father came down the pier at the Herreshoff Marine Museum in his 1970s mustang that has been in the family for more than 30 years. In addition, her father’s two best friends opened the door for the bride and carried her train as she walked the aisle with her parents laughing all the way. To top it off, the officiant, a friend of the couple, took a selfie of them during the ceremony. “It was so funny and a great way to capture the moment!”

Where are They Now

After going wild on a safari in South Africa, the newlyweds returned to their home in Bristol where Kristina is a digital marketing manager and Everett an associate attorney.

Brittany Rapoza & John Edwards

Newport really helped us fall in love and all of our favorite memories are tied to places in town. It will always be a part of our love story.

Brittany Rapoza & John Edwards on August 21, 2016

Published in the March/April 2017 issue of Newport Life Magazine

A girl walks into a bar.” Such began the love story of Bristol native Brittany Rapoza and John Edwards from Tiverton. Brittany and her father were having a drink where John was bartending when a Fairy Godmother waved her magic wand. “My phone died and my dad asked John if he had a charger,” explains the bride. “The two of them continued chatting for a while when suddenly my dad asked if I had John’s number!” Digits were exchanged. After a breakfast first date, the couple’s romance grew over the next two years as they enjoyed making memories at their favorite Newport locations, including their signature spot for summertime cocktails that now has an extra-special place in their hearts. “I proposed at Castle Hill. While we waited for drinks Britt asked a friend to take a picture of us, which is when I popped the question,” the groom remembers. “Brittany asked if I was serious so many times that I had to stand up and ask if she was saying yes. She said yes and the guests on the lawn cheered!” –TS

Fairy tales do come true

“Growing up in Bristol, I always thought of Blithewold as a fairy tale garden,” Brittany says about their reception venue. “Walking through the gardens, I could feel our excitement growing. I cried when we signed our papers because I knew my fairy tale was coming true.” They exchanged vows at the historic St. Mary’s Church in Newport, where the couple attends and where Brittany was confirmed as a child. “Both locations are so beautiful and timeless. They both have a great history and now our wedding will get to be part of that story.”

Once upon a time

Shades of pink and French blue complemented the classic fairy tale theme. While the bride donned a gown made for a princess with a strapless lace bodice and ruffled tulle skirt, the bridesmaids followed suit in the full-length dresses in the appropriately named color “Once Upon a Time.”

Let them eat cake

Ensuring that everyone could have the sweetest ending to their romantic celebration, the couple chose to serve three cakes: His, Hers & Theirs. His was a chocolate devil’s food cake with peanut butter frosting and chocolate ganache. Hers was an angel food cake with Grand Marnier filling and vanilla buttercream. And Theirs was a yellow sponge cake with raspberry preserves and lemon custard layers with vanilla buttercream.

Where are they now

After a week-long honeymoon on Nantucket, the couple returned to their home in Tiverton where Brittany is a second grade teacher in Tiverton public schools and John is a consultant for Ivy Wealth Management.

St. Augustin’s Church is very important to us because Brian’s grandparents were married there 64 years ago. And Rosecliff has been a dream of mine since I moved to Newport at the age of 17!

Kelly Garrett & Brian Smith on October 15, 2016

Originally published in the March/April 2017 issue of Newport Life Magazine.

Chemistry ignited in the lab at New York Presbyterian Hospital when Salve Regina graduate and Connecticut native Kelly Garrett was working with Brian Smith from Tennessee. After two years of friendship, the couple decided to make their relationship official and one year later, the groom-to-be knelt on the couple’s rooftop with a ring and a question. They quickly began making plans for their celebration in Newport, where Brian had spent his summers teaching at Sail Newport while visiting his grandparents in Portsmouth. –TS

Style with flair

To accompany the bride’s Maggie Sottero fit-and-flair gown, which featured allover lace and a sweetheart neckline, the bridesmaids each chose their own design within the color palette of blush, rose gold and champagne. To carry the stylish theme, the bride gave her wedding party gold clutches, gold flip-flops and blush silk robes.

Elegant touch

The “Romantic Elegance” theme was carried throughout the décor with a combination of high and low arrangements that featured hydrangeas, soft pink roses, gold baby’s breath and pink spray roses. Gold votives and candelabras were placed throughout the mansion and the fountain in the back had votive candles that flowed along the edge adding endless illumination. Even the four-tiered cake was opulently dressed in gold lace accents.

Made in heaven

The couple danced to “Thinking Out Loud” by Ed Sheeran as an ode to how they met. “It reminded us of how we found love right where we were.” In the evening, a lunar celebration took place with the arrival of a golden full moon. “It was perfect and an unexpected surprise to top off our décor!”

Where are they now

After saying “Aloha” to their Hawaiian honeymoon, the couple returned to their home in Sunnyside, NY where Kelly is a labor and delivery nurse and Brian is a program analyst.

“Our wedding was the quintessential ‘Newport wedding’ simply because, as many people have joked, we come from two big Fifth Ward families – most of the town would be at the wedding.”

Sarah Kirwin and Sean Brady on October 1, 2016

Originally published in the May/June 2017 issue of Newport Life Magazine.

Though their grandparents were friends, somehow Fifth Ward natives Sarah Kirwin and Sean Brady didn’t officially meet until 2011 at a Newport Rugby gathering. “It seemed like [Sean and I] met at just the right time and place despite all the times in the past that we could have and probably should have met,” Sarah recalls. After their first date on Halloween, dating was “the greatest (and easiest),” she says. There were never any awkward “meeting the family” moments, because Sarah’s dad and Sean’s mom grew up next door to each other. Once the couple was “a couple,” they planned a day trip to Martha’s Vineyard, though it was interrupted by a sold out ferry. So Sean turned the day around with a picnic in Newport on Ocean Drive and added a little more sparkle to Sarah’s day with a proposal. – LR

Wedding Attire

The bridesmaids and groomsmen chose their own attire for the beach wedding. The bridal party wore shades of purple, pink and champagne while the groomsmen wore casual suits.

Cheese Please!

At the reception, dinner consisted of a Mac and Cheese bar with “pick your own toppings,” including shredded buffalo chicken, sausage, prosciutto, bacon bits, caramelized onions, blue cheese crumble and feta. They also served cookies and brownies for guests rather than a traditional wedding cake.

The Wedding Singer

The bride surprised wedding guests by taking the microphone and singing with her band for 20 minutes to kick off the bash.

Personal Touches

Sarah, being a creative talent, made her own bouquet with silk flowers and beautiful brooches given to her by her bridesmaids. She made the centerpieces and floral decor with crepe paper as well.

Where are they now?

After a romantic weekend in a cozy cabin in New Hampshire (with no cell phone reception or cable television), the happy couple went back to their roots in the Fifth Ward where Sarah is a real estate agent and Sean works for General Dynamics Electric Boat in Quonset. The couple is also expecting a baby girl in June!

“His smile is the most contagious smile you’ll ever see. I knew we had something extremely special…”

Deanna Salter & David Cyr on July 7, 2016

OceanCliff

Published in Newport Life Magazine, May/June 2017

Wind swept hair, the setting sun and a sparkling diamond ring that conspired with the stars overhead… it is the stuff that dreams are made of. What began as a morning filled with anticipation and preparation for what was to be an editorial photo shoot, turned into a sunset of ocean sprayed kisses and the promise of unity between two souls. This was the proposal and the first chapter of Deanna and David’s wedding story. The couple had met at The Mews tavern in Wakefield during the 2014 UCONN vs Kentucky championship game. “Little did I know he had played for the UCONN basketball team, so for him to meet me on a night like that is priceless!”

Theme

Soft elegance and femininity with a tailored edge throughout the couple’s wedding details conveyed an air of romance and timeless tradition. The color palette of creamy whites, soft gray and powdery pinks flowed from the bridesmaids’ rose hued lace dresses to the centerpieces that graced the tables.

Two Looks

For the ceremony, Deanna donned a Justin Alexander embroidered chiffon ball gown with crystal encrusted portrait neckline. For her second look, she emerged in a stunning satin sheath with a Swarovski dipped open back and heavily beaded organza belt.

Fine Details

The classically designed bridal bouquet was a monochromatic composition of hydrangea, white garden roses and sumptuous peonies, presented within a crystal collar. The groom wore a simple yet striking single rose boutonniere complementing his bride, while the ladies’ nosegays featured soft pink roses and fluttering ribbon. After the salutes and champagne toasts came the cakes – hers a decadent trio of Kahlua, carrot and tiramisu, his, a manly Guinness chocolate stout with hints of bacon and peanut butter.

Where Are They Now

The Salve Regina University graduate has her Ph.D. in biomedical and pharmaceutical sciences and now is a Post-Doctoral Scholar at Tufts University. David is a finish carpenter, which according to Deanna “is a good thing because we sang karaoke on our second date and David would not make it as a singer.” They live in Canton, Massachusetts.

“Newport was a no-brainer. It’s where we met, fell in love and choose to raise our family.”

Ida Zohrabian & Mark Aramli on July 10, 2016

Originally published in the July 2017 issue of Newport Life Magazine.

It sounds like a Hallmark movie, serendipitous, sappy and every girl’s dream romantic encounter. Add a dramatic reality TV twist and you have the love story of Mr. and Mrs. Aramli. It was Memorial Day 2013 when the Manhasset, New York native Ida and her law school friends were vacationing in Newport. They decided to head to @ The Deck for dinner and music overlooking Newport Harbor when suddenly a group of men walked by. Mark immediately walked over and asked for her name. Within a year they were engaged. Mark, a University of Connecticut grad, entrepreneur and “Shark Tank” celebrity, had his first engineering role at United Technologies building space suits for NASA. He applied his knowledge of climactic comfort to everyday living and invented the BedJet. Although the investor “sharks” didn’t buy in, Mark scored big with Mattress Firm and with Ida too. He engineered a surprise engagement using the Fourth of July and his birthday weekend as the perfect cover, inviting their friends and family to a small party at @ The Deck. He hired a photographer, arranged his proposal song with the DJ and ordered champagne for everyone to toast. – LC

Dramatic Twist

“The weather was not ideal that morning, a bride’s worst nightmare. We had planned the most dreamy ceremony and the rain was about to ruin it. But Mark tracked the storms with radar every 15 minutes.” Thirty minutes before the outdoor ceremony, “Mark demanded the chairs be moved on to the lawn” and he was right. It didn’t rain until the photographs were complete and then it poured!

Decadent Design

Opulence was in every detail from Ida’s captivating Oscar de la Renta gown to the couple’s Christian Louboutin shoes; hers, crystal embellished “Follies Strass” pumps, his, less embellished loafers but red bottomed none-the-less. The design palate was composed of white, ivory and blush, complementary to the aesthetic integrity of their venue. The florals followed suit, featuring an array of hydrangea, roses, orchids and peonies.

Scrumptious Details

Cigars and ice luge bars with effervescent flutes of prosecco and martinis accompanied the lavish menu featuring oysters on the half, lobster rangoons, mini lamb chops, a Tuscan table with an assortment of gourmet pastas, land & sea entree selections, wedding cake, all topped off with flambe doughnut holes.

Where are they now?

After honeymooning in California, Hong Kong and Thailand, the newlyweds returned to their residence in Newport, which is also the BedJet corporate headquarters where they work together.

“Newport has so much to offer! The ocean is nearby and it has that New England charm.”

Julie Roper & Nathaniel Mireau on August 21, 2016

Originally published in the July 2017 issue of Newport Life Magazine.

In the fall of their senior year at Michigan State University, Wolverine state natives Julie Roper and Nate Mireau were assigned the same marketing project. Julie mustered up the courage to flirt when she asked him how to pronounce his name, which is now an inside joke. On an epic fun-filled first date, Nate took Julie out for dinner, salsa dancing and drinks and “was the perfect gentleman.” After graduation, they were both offered jobs at the same company in West Kingston, and continued their relationship for three years. On a sunny day in August 2015, in Block Island for Nate’s birthday, they laid a blanket on the sandy beach facing the sea, and Nate said how much he loved Julie, with a ring. As soon as her voice caught up with her heart, the bride-to-be happily said yes. -LR

Natural Beauty

The couple styled their wedding after the beauty of the vineyard. They chose mulberry red and soft green for the color scheme to reflect their surroundings along with gold accents to complement the deep brown rustic wood in their reception space.

Local Cuisine

The menu included Rhode Island favorites, such as crab cakes and miniature lobster rolls. They also served various wines from Newport Vineyards and beer from the groom’s favorite local brewery, Gray Sail of Westerly.

Sweet Tooth

In lieu of a traditional wedding cake, the Mireaus offered a variety of desserts, including brownies, cookies and the guests’ favorite, cheesecake squares!

Just before the ceremony, Julie remembered that the rings were still in the bridal suite. Her all-star maid of honor ran back to save the day. “I have never seen someone run so fast in high heels!”

Where are They Now

After a tranquility-filled honeymoon in Jamaica, the newlyweds returned to their home in Newport. Recently they relocated to Fort Myers, Florida and adopted a rescue dog they named Cadia after one of their favorite places, Acadia National Park.

It’s only natural to want the most important day of your life to stand out from the crowd. The first place to tackle this challenge is at the bar. Barbara Behan Howlett of Glorious Affairs Catering says signature drinks are always well received, and many guests have come to expect them. There’s no right or wrong method to choosing them. Behan Howlett recalls a groom who served a traditional Pimm’s Cup, but renamed it the “Game Set Match,” perfect for the Tennis Hall of Fame as their venue. Typically, the caterer can create an entirely new drink, personalized to the couple and event. Of the more unique options Glorious Affairs has originated, they’ve used a Spicy Pineapple with infused sweet chili and the Watermelon-tini with fresh watermelon puree. When concocting a signature drink, Behan Howlett starts off by asking what the bride and grooms’ favorite drinks are when they’re out at the bar. From there, she asks for the color scheme and theme of the wedding: “Is the theme Old Fashioned Glam where we would suggest vintage cocktails such as a French 75, or a Singapore Sling, or a Stork Club Cocktail? And would they like the drink color to match the wedding decor colors?” These answers lead the experts to a creation all your own- just tack on a catchy name and your guests will have your wedding on the tips of their tongues. -RT

Color Me Engaged

Rose or berry? Loden or sage? Once you’re engaged, color scheme choices become an integral part of your vernacular. You’ll know the difference between coral and salmon in the blink of an eye and your knowledge of metallic finishes will out-rival any metalsmith’s. So how do you decide? There are many ways to choose one whether you find inspiration from your favorite hues, the venue’s decor or shades from your most beloved flowers. For many brides, another jumping off point is the season of their celebration, but with today’s throw-caution-to-the-wind trends, almost anything goes.

“There are a lot of metallics appearing in weddings and the invitations reflect that with shimmered inks, pearlescent papers and a lot of foil,” explains Mimi Vazquez, owner of Paper and Pearl. “I’ve noticed that brides will carry the shine throughout their wedding, including their jewelry, decorations and tablescapes.” And when you think “metallics,” look beyond the basic silver and gold. Today’s sparkle also includes antique gold, brushed silver, nickel, platinum, copper, rose gold and every finish in between.

According to Vazquez, blush is still the first place color choice and she likes how it is being mixed with navy or charcoal suits for the gentlemen. “It’s soft, can go with everything and looks beautiful.” Another trend on the horizon is a flashback to black and white weddings for a classic, glamorous celebration. And you can never go wrong with a nautical theme or bright pops of color. “Mix up the navy and white with a gold or pale coral,” suggests Vasquez. “It’s a fresh take on a Newport classic style.”

Enchanted Spring

Fairy tale nuptials call for luscious florals and a nostalgic nod to yesteryear. Dusty lilac, pink and sage bloom beautifully in a springtime soiree.

Summer Shines

Choose one strong color as your shining star. A navy backdrop is the perfect way to make this fuchsia pop.

Seafaring Fall

Whoever says nautical is just for summer hasn’t seen a Newport fall day from the bow of a sailboat. This classic palette comes to life with the shimmery rose gold sequined gowns and accents.

Winter Wonder

A chic black and white combo conjures visions of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers twirling glamorously around the dance floor. Add some platinum bling, and you’ve got magic.

There is more than one way to celebrate. Whether it’s a bachelor or bachelorette party, a weekend with friends or a pre-wedding day get-together, Aquidneck Island offers unlimited opportunities for fun and relaxation. Not to mention lots of options to keep your wedding guests busy!

On the Move

Sport your whites on a court at the International Tennis Hall of Fame or take a lesson from a pro. If you’re in the mood to hit the links, any of the 18 holes you play at one of our verdant courses, like Jamestown Golf Course in Jamestown or Newport National Golf Club in Middletown, will be memorable. Cool off at a surf lesson from Rhody Surf before having a locally brewed beer at Newport Storm or Ragged Island Brewing Company. Get rolling on the historic railroad track that runs between the Sakonnet River Bridge and Melville with a six-mile ride on a pedal-powered open-air vehicle with Rail Explorers. Feel like taking it easy? In the summer months, enjoy picnicking and stomping the divots at a Newport International Polo game or grab your peanuts and popcorn and head to historic Cardines Field, home to Newport Gulls of the New England Collegiate Baseball League.

Ahhhs and Oms

Take refuge year round at a luxurious onsite spa, such as a Milk and Honey Body Wrap at SpaFjör in Hotel Viking. Or relax at ANLI Spa with its Bridal Celebration Package that includes a facial, massage, manicure and pedicure. “A spa is a calming atmosphere for the bridal party to gather and rejuvenate,” says ANLI Spa Director Lindsey Graves. “Make sure your wedding day is seamless by confirming the spa services six weeks in advance.” Find the ultimate stress relief at Thames Street Yoga or The Island Heron before slipping into one of the mineral-infused hydrotherapies during a Water Journey at The Bodhi Spa and chill in its 2000-square-foot outdoor Zen garden. Get in touch with your other-worldly side with a private tarot card reading at Northern Lights Holistic in Portsmouth. “Tarot readings are always a big hit, as they discuss love, career and life purpose,” says co-owner Lisa Ashton. “We can go to a location or bridal parties can book a night here and enjoy readings, massages, reiki sessions as well.”

Surf & Turf

Since Newport is the sailing capital of the world, you’re nearly obligated to board one of the boats and cruise Narragansett Bay. Take advantage of picturesque scenes aboard the Schooner Adirondack II or Sightsailer harbor tour, or test your own skills with a hands-on lesson at New England Sailing Center. To challenge your sea legs further, stand up paddle boards and surfboards are available at Island Surf & Sport. Trying to stay dry? Sip various local wines and sample cheeses while you take in the lush, green views of Newport Vineyards, or hit the pavement on one of Newport Historical Society’s walking tours year round. If you’re interested in getting your step count up, stroll the Cliff Walk and admire the legendary mansions on one side and the vast, sparkling sea on the other.

Let It Snow

When the temperature drops, the fun doesn’t stop. Even if you’ve seen Newport’s mansions before, the beauty of the Breakers, Rosecliff, and Marble House is enhanced further when adorned with Christmas lights and covered in glimmering, powdered snow. For more enriching history and cinematic wonderment, the Jane Pickens Theater and Event Center offers film viewings and live shows no matter the season. Shop until you drop for yourself, or for holiday gifts, with most stores including Shore Soap Company, Michael Hayes, Lemon & Line, and Primavera staying open year round. Rev your engine at Newport Car Museum and Audrain Auto Museum, or get in touch with your creative side by strolling through the Newport Art Museum and perusing the Sheldon Art Gallery. Feeling cooped up inside? The Norman Bird Sanctuary trails are ideal for sunny winter days of hiking or snow shoeing. If a truly classic winter-in-New England experience is what you seek, lace up your skates at the Newport Skating Center.

Natasha Catlin and Derek Aguiar on October 8, 2017

“Try not to let the details keep you from having fun with the planning and with your wedding day. In the beginning it will feel like you have so much to do and plan, but if you take it piece by piece it will all come together.”

Originally published in the July issue of Newport Life Magazine.

On the first evening of grad school at Brown University in 2008, Natasha Catlin’s ID was confiscated while trying to get a drink at the bar. Tiverton native Derek Aguiar explained that he’d return it under one condition: she agreed to a date with him. Of course, the Fairfield, CT, native accepted. Eight years later, just two days before Christmas, he took her to Roger Williams Park Zoo where he popped the question in front of her favorite exhibit: the elephants.

The Bird is the Word

Not only did the Audubon Society allow for a free-flowing, non-traditional event, which was important to the couple, but they also found scientific satisfaction in knowing that the venue rental fee supported the education center. To stay with the theme, they added packets of birdseed to be thrown and tiny wooden birds on top of the cupcake display.

What smells so good?

It’s eucalyptus. The couple loves the smell so much, they incorporated it throughout their wedding day. From the centerpieces to the seating, and even a garland around the officiant’s neck to differentiate the groom’s lifelong friend from the groomsmen, these sprigs of green were meticulously placed throughout.

Family Matters

It was important to the couple to keep the wedding close to Tiverton, where Derek grew up and in the area that his family resides, so Bristol was a natural fit. His grandmother, age 93, was in attendance too — she had inspected Natasha’s fingers for six years until she finally saw one of them adorned with the ring she had been waiting for.

Where are they now?

Derek and Natasha returned home to Pawtucket where Derek is a computer scientist at Princeton University and Natasha is a Reproductive and Developmental Toxicologist at Pfizer.
